Arrived at Sanford, Orlando Alamo having pre registered with Open Road scheme. Alamo operative said he "had a great car which would normally be upgrade, sign here , here , here & here!" I queried section stating that estimated credit card charge would be $187. He said he thought I had accepted upgrade. I replied that I just wanted the car I had ordered…no more….no less (a mid size SUV) he redid the paperwork. In parking lot the attendant told me he would get me a great minivan as they were "low on mid SUVs" (he didn’t have any!) I told him I wanted an SUV as that is what I had ordered. He brought over a Toyota Highlander, a standard size SUV. (So much for being able to pick your own!! Although it only had 28,000 on the clock all the carpets were really dirty and there were small white splashes (paint?) down one side of the car. Ater a 12 hour journey due to flight delays, I accepted the "upgrade". The car worked fine until the last couple of days when an orange warning light came on. I took it to the nearest Alamo desk at the Holiday Inn /192 Irlo Bronson Hwy. where I was told that the car would still be good to run as long as tyres looked OK. (Please note this writeup is a criticism of Alamo Car Hire only and does not reflect on USrentacar’s service which was very good). I travel twice a year to Florida and have used Alamo three times now. In my limited experience with them, their car valeting is poor and the vehicles often older and not as well serviced as some other companies. I will certainly look at other options carefully before using them again later this year. It seems the old adage is right…..generally, you get what you pay for!
